2009 PHCRED Tri-State Conference - Alice Springs

The 2009 PHCRED Tri-State Conference was held at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Alice Springs on 24th-25th September 2009. The conference, attended by about 60 researchers addressed the following:

  • Key issues in Primary Health Care
  • Research in progress
  • Capacity building and networking

Key Speakers

John WakermanProfessor John Wakerman is the Inaugural Director of the Centre for Remote Health, a Joint Centre of Flinders University and Charles Darwin University, in Alice Springs. He is a Public Health Medicine specialist and general practitioner, with a long background in remote primary health care services as a medical practitioner, senior manager and researcher. He is an active advocate for rural and remote health issues. He has specific academic interests in remote health services research and health management education. For the past several years, he has been investigating the nature of sustainable PHC services to remote and small rural communities.

 

Lesley BarclayLesley Barclay (AO PhD) was the foundation Professor of Health Services Development at Charles Darwin University and led the Graduate School for Health Practice prior to coming to Northern Rivers to take up the position as Professor and Director of the University Department of Rural Health. Lesley is a maternal child health researcher whose projects have improved maternity services in Australia and internationally. Lesley Barclay has led over 30 competitive research projects in the last decade, and has been or is a CI on 13 funded by NHMRC or ARC in this period, leading 8 of these. In the last 10 years she has supervised 24 doctoral students, published an international prize winning book with another under contract to be competed this year, 51 refereed research based journal articles and over 15 major reports for governments.
