Dr Ruth Sladek completed a PhD in the School of Medicine at Flinders University in 2008, investigating cognitive processes and decision making among doctors within the context of understanding evidence implementation. This was funded by the National Institute of Clinical Studies, part of the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC). NICS’ role within the NHMRC is to improve health care by getting the best available evidence from health and medical research into everyday practice. Ruth’s qualifications are underpinned by Master of Public Health Degree completed at Adelaide University, and undergraduate majors in psychology and library and information management. As a health service researcher, she currently manages the Research to Practice Group at Flinders Medical Centre and has an adjunct appointment with Flinders University. She is currently involved in a range of studies, the largest being an RCT investigating the use of academic detailing for carers of patients using home oxygen therapy. Ruth’s research interests revolve around evidence translation and include eHealth literacy, individual differences in thinking and behaviour, psychometrics, and bibliometrics work validating Medline search filters, particularly in Indigenous Health and end-stage heart failure. |

Mark Morgan trained as a GP in Oxford UK. He has worked as a partner in Hawkins Clinic Mt Gambier for 11 years and since December as a GP in Aldgate, Adelaide Hills.
Mark is a Senior Lecturer and tutor at Flinders University South Australia, he also tutors medical students at Adelaide University. He has been a Senior Research Fellow with the Greater Green Triangle UDRH, a PHCRED bursary holder and now PHCRED fellow.
Mark’s research interests are system changes to improve chronic disease management. His current research is in collaborative care for management of diabetes, heart disease and co-morbid depression. Research sponsored by PHCRED led Mark to publish his study "How do we compare - applying the UK pay for performance criteria to an Australian general practice". The paper has been presented to the RACGP conference and published in AFP. |

New Face at Flinders PHCRED Program
Welcome to RDP Fellow Bradley Smith. Bradley recently submitted his PhD and will be working with PHCRED Coordinator Leigh Roeger on current projects including the the Complex Chronic Disease Study.
"I obtained a Bachelors and Honours degree in Psychology from the University of South Australia. I have a strong foundation in animal-related psychological research, and have recently submitted my PhD in Psychology (animal behaviour) at UniSA. My thesis focused on the behaviour and cognition of captive dingoes (Canis dingo). The study aimed to conduct a comparative analysis of canid cognition by testing dingoes on a series of behavioural experiments. The findings from the thesis supported the idea that wild and domestic canids differ in cognitive functioning. That is, wild canids (such as wolves and dingoes) are more adept at non-social problem solving tasks than domestic dogs. My work has been published in peer-reviewed journals such as Animal Behaviour, Animal Cognition, Anthrozoos, and the Journal of Applied Animal Welfare Science. I began working with PHCRED as an RDP fellow in May 2010. I am thankful for the opportunity of becoming part of the team at Flinders University, and transferring my skills to the area of primary health care. The position gives me the chance to learn about a new area, and be involved in research that has a more applied focus. I look forward to the challenge!" |
